Will I need to take placement exams?

Summary

Steps to take placement exams and criteria by which they may be waived.

Body

All students must take the placement test for Math, English and Reading UNLESS they meet criteria to receive one of the following exemptions:

  1. Submit an ACT national subscore or UCO residual ACT subscore showing scores of 19 or above in the curricular areas of English, Reading, and Math.  You will only be required to take placement tests for curricular areas in which your ACT subscore is below 19.

  2. Have earned a minimum of three college-level credits of transferable math or English from a regionally accredited institution. College transcripts must be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (admissions@uco.edu).

  3. Have completed an Advanced Placement (AP) exam for AP English Language, AP Calculus, AP PreCalculus, or AP Statistics and have achieved a minimum score of 3. A score report must be sent directly from the Get the Most Out of AP website to admissions@uco.edu.

  4. Taken and passed the Next-Gen ACCUPLACER for English and Reading within the last five years. We do not accept ALEKS Math scores from other institutions at this time. Official ACCUPLACER scores should be submitted directly from the institution to UCO Testing Services (testingservices@uco.edu).

  5. Have completed the National SAT exam and have achieved a minimum of 510 on the math portion and 510 on the SAT ERW (English + Reading).

Provided that you have completed an application for admission and paid the application fee, there is no charge for first-attempt computerized placement tests (CPT) administered on campus.

We offer placement exams for English and Reading (ACCUPLACER) and Math (ALEKS).
