Lockdown Browser & Instructor Live Proctoring

Description

Respondus Lockdown Browser now allows you, as the instructor, to monitor your students while they take exams.  Now you can conduct exams for students from a distance and feel an extra layer of confidence in the academic integrity of the remote learning experience.

Instructions

Setting up the Live Proctoring Quiz/Exam

  1. Create a quiz/exam as you traditionally would in D2L. 
  2. After creating your quiz in D2L, navigate to the LockDown Browser tab.
  3. Click the ⏬ (down arrow) next to the quiz/exam for which you want to enable LockDown Browser Instructor Live Proctoring, and select Settings.

The next 4 steps are required for live proctoring.
  1. Under LockDown Browser Settings select, Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.
  2. Under Proctoring select, Allow instructor live proctoring for this exam (via Zoom, Teams, etc) Beta.
  3. Select your video conferencing system: Zoom, Teams, or Other (for Webex).
  4. Enter a word or alpha-numeric combination into the start code box. Once everyone has joined your video conference, you will provide this code to students so they can begin the exam.

Conducting the Live Proctoring

  • Provide students the instructions for downloading and installing LockDown Browser
  • Notify students that LockDown Browser and a video conferencing system will be used. Scheduling a practice exam where everything can be tried by the class in advance can be helpful.
  • Use the process to create a meeting for the video conferencing system (Zoom, Teams, Webex). Distribute the meeting information to students prior to the exam.
  • At the beginning of class, take attendance and confirm you can see and hear all students in the video conferencing system.
  • When ready, provide the Start Code to students to commence the exam.
  • Remind students the video conferencing system will continue to run in the background, enabling you to see and hear them during the exam. However, they will be unable to access web conferencing during the exam.
  • The instructor will need to ensure students stay in the video conference during the exam.

Note: iPads do not allow running a video conferencing app and LockDown Browser at the same time. Consider these alternatives: 1) Have the student use a different device altogether (Windows, Mac, Chromebook) or  2) have the student use a second device for the video conferencing itself.
