Edit YouTube Auto-Captions

Introduction

Many people use YouTube to post videos. When a video is uploaded to YouTube, automatic captions are generated by machine learning algorithms and, because of this, the quality of the captions may vary. It is important for the video creator to review the automatic captions and edit any parts that haven't been properly transcribed. Follow the directions below to edit your captions in YouTube.

Directions

Once logged into your YouTube account, select your account icon in the top right corner then select YouTube Studio.

Third option in the list is YouTube Studio.

On the left side panel, select Subtitles.

Next to your video under Languages, select the dropdown arrow. To the far right, click on the link labeled Duplicate and Edit.

Link is available to click in order to duplicate and edit the captions.

From here, you can choose to Edit as Text or edit with Assign Timings.

To change from edit as text to assigned timings, click the link labeled Assign Timings.

An option is available to switch the view of the edit captions to assigned timings.

To change from assign timings to edit as text, click the link labeled Edit as Text.

From here, you can edit the text and adjust the timing. To adjust the timing, either enter start and stop times to the right of the text boxes, or use the slider bar below the video to adjust.

Options are highlighted to edit timing to the right of the text or below the video by dragging the timing bar.

Once you are done editing, select Publish.

Once finished, the published button is available in the top right hand of the screen.
