Network Troubleshooting

Summary

Basic troubleshooting steps for wired and wireless network connections

Body

Wired (Ethernet) Basic Network Troubleshooting

Check Connection

Verify that the network cable is properly connected to both your computer and the wall jack.  Make sure the LEDs next to or above the network port on the computer are properly illuminated.  A solid green LED or light usually indicates that the device is either connected or receiving a signal.  A flashing green light is an indication of data being sent or received.

The picture below is an example of a Local Area Network (LAN) port with two LED indicators.  Typically, one LED will light up if connected properly and the other will flash when transmitting data.

If you do not notice any activity on the LED indicators, unplug the cable from the computer and then plug the cable back in again to see if that resolves the issue.

It is possible that the network cable could be damaged.  Replace the network cable and try again.

Check TCP/IP Settings

The TCP/IP settings should be set to obtain an IP address automatically and to obtain the DNS server address automatically.

Restart the Computer

Restarting your computer can often fix network connection issues.  Sometimes a computer won't connect because there is some temporary setting getting in the way.  Restarting the device can clear these temporary settings, often resulting in a successful connection.

Wireless Basic Network Troubleshooting

Check Networks

Verify that your device can see the UCO and/or UCO_SECURE networks.  See WiFi Connection Assistance for more information regarding which network you should be connecting to.

If your device cannot see either of the wireless networks, try the following:

  • Move to a different location and check again.  It may be that you are in a low coverage area.
  • Ensure that wireless is turned on for your device.
  • Restart your device.

Connect to a Network

See WiFi Connection Assistance for more information pertaining to connecting to a wireless network.

Forget the Network and Reconnect

Forget the wireless network you are connected to and reconnect.

Check TCP/IP Settings

The TCP/IP settings should be set to obtain an IP address automatically and to obtain the DNS server address automatically.
