Register and Update Microsoft Backup Credentials

Introduction

This article describes the steps needed to setup backup credentials for Microsoft Backup Authentication and how to update credentials if needed. This is used as a means of verifying your identity for the Microsoft Self-Service Password Reset Tool.

Instructions

Register Email & Phone ​​​​​
  1. Go to https://www.office.com and select the option to "Sign In"

  2. Enter your UCO email (username@uco.edu), and click "Next" button.

  3. Enter your password in the "Password" box to sign in.
  4. Click "Next" button on the "More information required" page.

  5. First, you will register a phone number. Enter the Country Code and Phone Number for a device you commonly have available. A code will by sent by text message (sms) when you click the "Next" button.

  6. Enter the 6-digit code you received and click the "Next" button.

  7. A message reading "Phone number added" will display. Click the "Done" button.

  8. Second, you will register an alternate email address. Enter a personal email address (This cannot be an @uco.edu address.). A code will be sent by email when you click the "Next" button.

  9. Enter the 6-digit code you received and click "Next" button.

  10. A message reading "email added" will display. Click "Done" to close the panel.

Update Email & Phone ​​​​​​
  1. Sign into your Microsoft account at https://myaccount.microsoft.com
  2. On the left, select "Security Info"

  3. Your security information (phone and email) will be displayed. Select the "Change" link to the right of the phone or email you need to change. (Note, passwords cannot be changed here.)

  4. Enter the new phone number or email into the box provided. A code will be sent to the phone or email when you click the "Next" button.
  5. Enter the 6-digit code you received and click "Next" button.
  6. If successful, a confirmation message will display and the new phone number or email will be shown in your security information.
