The purpose of this article is to introduce UCO students, faculty, and staff to the functionality and features of Microsoft Copilot. Access to the standard version of Copilot is provided to all UCO users at no cost. Copilot prompts and responses are covered by Microsoft 365 data protection policies.
What is Copilot?
Microsoft Copilot is an AI-powered assistant integrated into Microsoft 365 applications. Additionally, Copilot Chat may be accessed via a web browser. Copilot’s underlying Large Language Model (LLM) is OpenAI’s GPT-4o. This multimodal model understands natural language (e.g., text) and can analyze image files. It can then generate helpful, context-aware responses for various tasks including, but not limited to, writing, coding, summarization, and answering questions.
Copilot is a prompt or question-driven AI content generator. It is designed to understand and generate various types of data, including:
- Text & Document Files: .txt, .md, .docx, .pdf
- Data & Spreadsheet Files: .csv, .xlsx, .json, .xml
- Code & Config Files: .py, .js, .html, .css, .sql, .yaml/.yml, .ini, .env
- Image Files: .jpg, .png, .bmp, .gif, .webp, .svg
File upload in Microsoft Copilot allows users to upload supported file types directly into their chat sessions from OneDrive or their local machine. Once uploaded, Copilot can analyze and extract information from these files to provide relevant insights, answer questions, or assist with specific tasks.
The standard version of Copilot is limited to approximately 15 complex queries per day. When the daily limit is reached, the user must wait until the following day for the daily limit to reset. During the interim period, Copilot will be unavailable. Copilot Pro subscriptions with access to the GPT-4 Turbo model are available for power users and follow a cost recovery model. Please consult your department leadership if you are interested.
