Vanity URLs and Domains

Service Overview

This service allows UCO departments and programs to request vanity URLs (such as uco.edu/example) or custom domain names for marketing, promotion, or branding purposes (such as a dot com). Vanity URLs help create memorable, short links that are ideal for printed materials and verbal communication. University Communications partners with Information Technology to support requests for custom domain names outside the uco.edu domain, when appropriate.

Key Details

Vanity URLs must follow university naming conventions and be approved by University Communications. They are typically in the format of uco.edu/keyword and redirect to a full uco.edu URL. In most cases we provide the coordinating sub domain for uniformity and consistency (example: uco.edu/buddy AND buddy.uco.edu)

Custom domains (such as mycustomsite.org) may be approved under special circumstances and are subject to additional approval and purchase processes. These requests are reviewed to ensure alignment with university branding and legal requirements and then transferred to Information Technology for the purchasing process.

Guidelines

  • Vanity URLs must direct to an official university webpage.
  • Requests for URLs that are misleading, too broad, or unrelated to UCO services will be denied.
  • University Communications will determine whether a vanity URL or full domain is most appropriate.
  • Custom domains are discouraged unless a strategic business case supports the request.
  • In some cases, requests are referred to our <link to service> Shortlinks such as go.uco.edu/example</end link>.
